Cost of Moving from Kilimani to Westlands: What You Need to Know

Moving from Kilimani to Westlands is a common relocation in Nairobi, driven by proximity to business hubs, lifestyle changes, or housing preferences. Both neighborhoods offer vibrant urban living, but the cost of moving can vary widely depending on several factors. In this guide, we’ll break down the typical expenses, hidden costs, and tips to keep your move budget-friendly.

Key Factors Affecting Moving Costs

1. Distance and Route

The distance between Kilimani and Westlands is roughly 3–5 kilometers, depending on your exact pickup and drop-off points. While short, the route often involves traffic-heavy roads like Waiyaki Way or Argwings Kodhek Road. Moving companies may factor in time spent in congestion, especially during peak hours.

2. Size of Your Household

The amount of furniture, boxes, and belongings directly impacts the cost:

• Studio or 1-bedroom apartment: KES 3,000 – 6,000
• 2-bedroom apartment: KES 5,000 – 10,000
• 3-bedroom house or larger: KES 8,000 – 15,000

These estimates include basic loading, transport, and unloading. Extra items like pianos, large safes, or fragile antiques may incur surcharges.

3. Additional Services

Many moving companies offer optional services that add to the total:

• Packing materials: Boxes, bubble wrap, and tape (KES 500 – 2,000)
• Packing/unpacking labor: KES 2,000 – 5,000 per service
• Furniture disassembly and reassembly: KES 1,000 – 3,000 per item
• Storage fees (if needed): Varies by duration and space

Hidden Costs to Watch Out For

• Stairs or elevators: Movers may charge extra if your apartment lacks a lift.
• Parking fees: In Westlands, some buildings require paid parking for moving trucks.
• After-hours moving: Weekend or evening moves can cost 20–30% more.
• Bulky items: Large appliances, gym equipment, or heavy furniture may attract additional fees.

Ask the moving company upfront about these potential extras.

Tips to Reduce Moving Costs

• Declutter before packing: Sell or donate items you no longer need. Fewer belongings mean lower transport costs.
• Pack yourself: Use free boxes from supermarkets and wrap fragile items with clothes or towels.
• Book during off-peak days: Weekdays, especially Tuesday–Thursday, are often cheaper than weekends.
• Negotiate: Some movers offer discounts for cash payments or referrals.
